Know Your Hair Type
Black hair ranges from Type 3C (loose coils) to 4C (tight zig-zag coils). Knowing your type determines which products, cuts, and styles work best for your natural pattern and density. 4A holds waves beautifully; 4C thrives with locs, TWAs, and defined afros.
Scalp Health First
A healthy scalp is the foundation of great hair. Black scalps are prone to dryness and buildup from product overuse. Cleanse with a sulfate-free shampoo every 7-10 days, deep condition weekly, and seal with a natural oil like jojoba, castor, or peppermint-infused oil for stimulation.
The Perfect Fade
The fade is the cornerstone of Black men's barbering — from skin/bald fades to low, mid, and high transitions. A skilled barber blends from skin up through your chosen guard length, following the natural hairline. Always specify your guard numbers (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) and blend points.
360 Waves Training
Waves require consistent brushing (with a boar bristle brush), moisture with a light pomade or wave grease, a durag for compression while sleeping, and patience. Begin with a 1.5 or 2 guard haircut. Brush in the direction of wave flow for 30+ minutes daily. Expect 4-6 weeks to see consistent patterns.
Line-Up & Edge Care
The shape-up or line-up defines the perimeter of your haircut. Clean edges along the forehead, temples, and sideburns elevate any style from a 7 to a 10. Between barber visits, maintain edges with a T-blade trimmer. Apply edge control gel only at the hairline — never all over.
Locs: Starting & Maintaining
Starter locs (from comb twists, palm rolls, or interlocks) require 12-18 months to fully mature. During the "teen loc" phase (months 3-9), avoid over-manipulation. Moisturize with water-based sprays, not heavy waxes. Retwist every 4-6 weeks. Once mature, locs are the most low-maintenance natural style available.
Design Cuts & Engravings
Hair engravings — lines, lightning bolts, words, logos, and geometric patterns etched into the fade — are an art form rooted in Black barbershop culture. The best designs use contrast: dark scalp against faded hair. Placement matters: side temple designs, back designs, or full top patterns each read differently.
Product Stack Essentials
Black hair requires moisture at every step. Build your stack: a leave-in conditioner as base, a light oil (jojoba or argan) for shine, a water-based styling product for definition, and edge control for perimeter. Avoid alcohol-heavy products and Vaseline — both block moisture absorption and cause buildup.
Barber Communication
Miscommunication is the #1 cause of a bad haircut. Always bring reference photos. Specify guard numbers, fade height (low = above the ear, mid = at the ear, high = above the temple), and taper vs. bald preference.
